About the Project

The Matthew Freeman Project: Pens & Paper for Peace has applied for tax exemption as a not-for-profit charitable organization dedicated to collecting pens, paper, and other school supplies in cities and towns across the United States and sending them to U.S. military personnel for distribution in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other war-torn countries where children’s education has been interrupted by armed conflict. All donations are tax-deductable.

About Lisa Freeman

Lisa Freeman was a 30-year veteran school teacher in Richmond Hill, Georgia when Matthew was killed in action in Afghanistan in August, 2009. When Boy Scouts in Richmond Hill collected school supplies after learning of Matthew’s death, Lisa decided to build a network of high school and college students across the country – Chapter Presidents of The Matthew Freeman Project: Pens & Paper for Peace – who would collect school supplies and facilitate sending those supplies to U.S. military personnel, who would, in turn give them to school children in war-torn countries.
